As a reminder, in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and across the United States, students in grades 9-11 will take a Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on October 10, 2018. This day will be a two-hour early release for all students.
The PSAT/NMSQT is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®, and specifically measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills and writing skills. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
Pre-Survey Parent Opt Out - Parents and/or Guardians of Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Grade Students
Ninth grader students will take the PSAT 8/9, which is specifically designed for eighth and ninth graders. Tenth and eleventh grade students will take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). On test day, students will participation in a preadministration session, completing an optional pre-survey from PSAT. You may view a copy of the optional pre-survey for the PSAT 8/9 online at https://www.fcps.edu/node/36642 and for the PSAT/NMSQT online at https://www.fcps.edu/node/36640. If you do not wish for your child to take part in the pre-survey, please complete the form linked here and return it to Shelley Terry in H-135 by September 28, 2018. This form will also be available during Back to School Night.
Registration and payment
Fairfax County Public Schools pays for all 9th and 10th grade score reports. Juniors who would like to have their PSAT/NMSQT scored must register and pay $20. If you would like to have your test scored please fill out the attached registration form, with a check for $20, and have it turned into the Shelley Terry in H-135 by October 5th. She will also have a table at Back To School Night on September for Junior parents to register.
If your student qualifies for Free and Reduce Meals, we have a limited number of fee waivers for Juniors to have their test scored. Those students interested in receiving the fee waiver will need to see their counselor prior to the October 5th registration deadline.
Preparing for the test
During Wolf Time on September 17th, teachers will present information to students about the important of PSAT and provide 10th and 11th graders with a practice guide.
PSAT Day – Senior Activities
Attendance for seniors will not be taken on PSAT Day, October 10, 2018. However the following activities will be taking place at school on PSAT Day:
- Senior IB diploma candidates will attend a mandatory Extended Essay session in the library
- The Career Center will be open for seniors who would like assistance with their college applications.
- Remediation will be available for seniors who need to pass the WISE financial literacy test to obtain an industry certification
