How to Talk About Alcohol Safety

Stores have been packed with holiday savings, credit cards have been charged, and food has been consumed. The holidays are often a time for family and friends to come together and create lasting memories with one another. The matching holiday pajamas leave a lasting impression on social media, but what impression does your relationship with alcohol leave on your child. Although difficult, conversations about alcohol safety are necessary. When consuming alcoholic beverages around young people, consider the  message you would like for them to receive. Have you caught yourself saying any of the following: “ I need a drink,” “a drink would help me relax,” or “wine helps me sleep better at night”. These statements could inadvertently cause your child to believe that alcohol is a suitable replacement for healthy coping strategies.

It’s never too early to have age-appropriate conversations with your child about alcohol. About 10% of children say they have tried alcohol and that number increases to 50% by the time they are 15 (SAMHSA). Early and frequent conversations about alcohol and other drugs tend to be more effective than having “the talk” once. If you choose to not have the conversation with your child as a parent, they will still have the conversion with their peers. Silence communicates as loudly as a verbal conversation, so it’s up to you to decide what message is explicitly shared.

For general questions about the FCPS Substance Abuse Prevention Program, please contact the Office of Student Safety & Wellness at: (571) 423-4270.

School Board Reviews Draft School Year Calendar Options

At their January 17 work session, the School Board discussed draft calendars that were created for the 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 school years. Draft calendars were developed using the following criteria as a framework:

  • Federal, state, and Virginia Department of Education guidance.
  • Superintendent’s priorities.
  • School Board input.
  • Student absentee data.
  • Staff absentee data.
  • Surrounding jurisdictions’ calendars.
  • Survey results.
  • Calendar Feedback Committee input.

You may view the draft calendars and other related documents in Boarddocs. The calendars will be presented as new business during the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 26. The Board is scheduled to vote on the calendars during their meeting on Thursday, February 9.

FY 2023-24 Proposed Budget Highlights

At the January 12 School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for FY 2024 that focuses on attracting and retaining teachers and staff, initiatives aimed at closing the achievement gap for all students, and gives our youngest learners a strong start, including investments for special education students impacted during the pandemic.

The FY 2024 Proposed Budget totals $3.5 billion—a net increase of $249.6 million or 7.6% over the FY 2023 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is targeted at instruction. The Proposed Budget focuses on several key areas:

  • Innovative investments that close the achievement gap for all students:
    • Equitable access to literacy.
    • Increased access to PreK programming.
    • Supports for students with special education needs.
    • Funding for students in Advanced Academic Programs.
    • Changing student enrollment needs.
    • Increase in student and family supports, including access to middle school athletic opportunities that support student well-being.
  • Continuation of green investments.
  • Increased security measures.
  • Proposed increases in employee compensation.

Watch Dr. Reid’s presentation to the board. Access the presentation slides on Boarddocs.

Strategic Plan: Make Your Students’ Voice Count!

Strategic Planning is in process and will incorporate feedback from school staff, families, students, and community partners and organizations. Please encourage your students to participate in this unique opportunity to share their voices.

FCPS is currently seeking secondary students in grades 7-12 who are interested in participating in a Strategic Plan focus group. This focus group provides an opportunity to share feedback in a small group with other FCPS students and a trained facilitator. FCPS is hosting four virtual focus groups for secondary students in February and March:

  • February 9, 3:30-5 p.m. or 5:30-7 p.m.
  • March 16, 3:30-5 p.m. or 5:30-7 p.m.

Interested students should check their email for a form to sign up for the focus groups. Students will be asked to provide their student ID, so their parents/caregivers can be identified and contacted to ask for consent to participate.

If you have any questions about the student focus groups or you would like to learn more about this opportunity, please contact [email protected].

JUSTICE HS PTSA NEWS

The Wolf Shack: School Store and Resource Pantry is opening! We are very excited to be able to establish this avenue to serve our school community. We plan to provide essential resources that students can easily collect, starting with food and toiletries and moving to clothing and academic, artistic, and athletic supplies. We will use the funds earned from the sale of the spirit-wear, snacks, and drinks to restock the pantry. The success of this endeavor is dependent upon the financial support and volunteerism of the students, staff, and community.

Please donate food, essentials, money, Amazon or Giant gift cards, and sign-up to volunteer. The "store-side" opened on November 16th; to continue being open regularly we will need additional and consistent volunteers. With your continued donations we can maintain needed provisions. THANK YOU!

Justice Junction - Community News & Updates - January 6, 2023

GovDelivery3 weeks 5 days ago

January 6, 2023

Hello Justice HS Students, Families, and Community Members,

We have successfully made it through our first week of 2023!  I also want to take this opportunity to thank all those teachers, students, families, friends, and community members that came together in the spirit of giving to help members of the Justice High School Community that needed help during this holiday season. Many needs were met, tears shed, and grateful hearts filled.

This winter/spring promises to be fun for all of our staff and students, with sports, science fairs, social events and musicals. Yesterday, students from Justice HS and Glasgow MS orchestra programs visited elementary schools within our Justice Pyramid by performing and sharing their love of instrumental music.  Below are pictures from the recruitment tour:

We have so many exciting opportunities happening in the next weeks. Please visit the school website and social media often so that you don’t miss a thing. We are definitely moving full steam ahead for the last half of this school year!

A high school academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses that can prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Students enrolling in Academy elective courses will be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of career experiences including shadowing, mentoring, and/or internships with local businesses.

Learn more and find the calendar of Academy Open Houses.

Lunch Service and Food Deliveries

Meals (breakfast & lunch) are free for every Justice HS student this year.  For safety reasons, we may not have food deliveries for students during the school day (example: Uber Eats, Grub Hub, Door Dash, etc.).  Students that have food delivered will have it confiscated. Parents are still allowed to drop off food and leave it in the main office for students to pick up during passing time. Please review this information with your child.  This information will also be announced daily on the morning announcements.

If your child has any special dietary needs, please contact our Administrative Assistant Glendi Cabrera at [email protected] and she will direct your concerns to our food services manager.

Science Department is excited to announce the Science Fair event, which will take place on February 1st, starting at 3:00 PM. We need volunteers and we will offer a short informative session prior to the event. Refreshments will be provided after the Science Fair.

If you are interested in supporting our students by being a judge, please send an email to the science fair co-directors, Ms. Cynthia Martinez ([email protected]) and Ms. Catalina Steriade ([email protected]), no later than January 25th.

Building and Renovation Plan Focuses on High Quality Facilities

Fairfax County Public Schools outlined plans to build three new elementary schools and to acquire land that will be used for a new high school during the School Board meeting on December 15th.

Other projects include three new and/or repurposed school facilities, the renovation of 25 schools, and the relocation of modular buildings. Timelines for capital projects will be posted on CIP project web pages, where you can follow the progress of each approved project.

The proposed CIP will be discussed at the January 10th School Board work session. A public hearing is scheduled for January 12th. The School Board is scheduled to take action on February 9th. Read more in the CIP news release.

School Improvements Supported by County Bonds

Capital projects reflect a $205 million investment approved by Fairfax County voters in the November 2021 bond referendum.

Funding allocations to FCPS from bond sales have increased in recent years due to positive collaboration and partnerships between the Joint CIP Committee of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the School Board. FCPS appreciates the continued support from Fairfax County leadership.

Voters will have the opportunity to approve additional bond funding for school projects included in the CIP in November 2023, which will support the division’s ability to continue to work through construction and renovation needs.

THANK YOU!

Justice Junction - Community News & Updates - January 2, 2023

GovDelivery1 month ago

January 2, 2023

Hello Justice HS Students, Families, and Community Members,

Let me begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year filled with many successes and continued progress. During winter break, I hope you had the chance to catch up with friends and family and enjoy some rest and relaxation. I certainly spent some time reflecting on 2022 and mentally prepare the work and opportunities that lie ahead in 2023.

As we approach the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and his legacy in a few weeks; I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes of his, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”  One of the things I appreciate most about our Justice High School community is that we are not silent about the things that matter and together we continue to provide a high-quality service for our students.

At Justice, we place great value on seeing our students showing continued academic success, healthy social/emotional accomplishments, and overall progress as they move through their academic journey while here at Justice.  I am excited to begin our work for the second half of the school year to ensure that learning continues. As we ring in the new year, we will begin to use this time as an opportunity to regularly check in with students and families to ensure that our students are on-track as we close out the 2nd quarter and are prepared and ready for the second half of the year.

Justice High School continues to strive to become a school focused on educational equity and find unique and innovative ways to partner, support and create opportunities that make our campus a place where all students feel safe, enjoy learning, develop strong relationships, and continue to grow each day socially, emotionally, and academically.

Thank you for your continued support as we navigate through this world of education with a cheerful heart in unison! Read below for additional amazing opportunities and important news for students and parents. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Coach Ua is a proud alum of Justice High School where she played both varsity volleyball and varsity softball. Shortly after graduating, she returned to coach both sports. In 2013, she graduated from George Mason University with a B.S in Criminology, Law and Society. During her undergrad time at GMU, Somarly also played Club Sports. After taking a couple of years off, she went back to school and earned her Master’s degree in Special Education.

Somarly currently works at Justice High School as a Special Education Teacher in Fairfax County.

Coach Ua has been an assistant coach at Justice High School for 12 seasons both within the softball and volleyball programs. She is super excited to take over the varsity softball program.

Coach Fioramonti grew up in Manassas, Virginia, where he played travel soccer for Northern Virginia Soccer Club (NVSC) and went on to play four years of varsity at Seton High School.  After high school, he attended Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio where he earned his degree in early/special education and was a four-year starting center midfielder and captain.  Coach Fioramonti returned to the Northern Virginia area in 2018 and began teaching as a 4th grade teacher in Lorton, Virginia.  Over the past two years, he has taught at Glen Forest as a 5th grade general education teacher.  Since returning to Northern Virginia, Fioramonti has coached as a travel soccer head coach as well as a Super Y coach for NVSC.  Over the past three summers, he has also started and run a soccer camp in the Manassas and Falls Church areas for elementary and middle school players.  Last season, Coach Fioramonti was the assistant coach for Justice High School’s Varsity program.  Coach Fioramonti is very excited to continue to be a part of the Justice High School community!

December 9, 2022

Hello Justice HS Students, Families, and Community Members,

We are officially one week away from our Winter Break.  During this season of the year, we would like to say thanks to:

  • Parents and guardians who are doing your very best to send your child ready to learn every day

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay).

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in [email protected], bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.

THANK YOU!

Justice Junction - Community News & Updates - November 20, 2022

GovDelivery2 months 1 week ago

November 20, 2022

Hello Justice HS Students, Families, and Community Members,

With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us, I want to take this opportunity to express how grateful I am to be a part of such a special community of teachers, learners, and families.  It is a true gift to work among such talented faculty, staff, and students.  This past week has been a test of our strength as a community and I’m appreciative of the support we continue to display with one another. This is a difficult time for everyone, but I know our Justice community will be able to lean on each other as we remember and celebrate our student and classmate, Lesly Diaz Bonilla.

As a reminder, we will have the Superintendent Community Conversation at Justice High School on tomorrow beginning at 6:30 PM in the Little Theatre.  Learn more about Dr. Michelle Reid, FCPS superintendent, and help her get to know our school community. Language interpretation will be provided, as available, as well as childcare and light refreshments.

We will open the "store-side" on November 16th; to continue being open regularly we will need additional and consistent volunteers. Justice Junction - Community News & Updates - November 4, 2022

GovDelivery2 months 4 weeks ago

October 24, 2022

Hello Justice HS Students, Families, and Community Members,

This week our campus, along with Glasgow MS, underwent our 5 year evaluation process for our International Baccalaureate (MYP/DP) programs. I’d like to publicly thank our staff, students, parents, and district personnel who made this process a successful one!  Below are a few highlights from the visit:

Strengths:

  • Staff passion for creating an inclusive environment with a coherent curriculum
    • Evidence of student choice and opportunities for reflection
  • Stability and commitment to breaking down barriers for student learning
  • Student primary feedback:  they like their teachers and the diversity of the schools

Areas of Growth:

  • Continue work involving horizontal and vertical articulation within and between the schools
  • Increase explicit communication with all stakeholders about the opportunities within an IB school/pyramid

We are committed to continuing the expansion and evolution of IB Programs in the Justice Pyramid!

I’m excited to announce Justice has been chosen as a NABSE Demonstration School!  Our campus presentation will take place on Friday, December 2nd at NABSE 50th Annual Conference.  See the excerpt from Dr. Reid’s weekly reflection below:

I’m also proud to announce, an Educate Fairfax Grant was awarded to teacher, Morgan Benfield.  Her proposal for Capable Candle Co. was selected for funding at $1,000.00!  Congratulations Ms. Benfield on receiving this award!

With our unseasonably warm, but beautiful weather that is forecasted for the weekend, I hope you’re able to get out and enjoy it to the fullest.

Read below for additional amazing opportunities and important news for students and parents. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Safety & Wellness Information Session

We as a school would like to share both what we are doing to support a healthy environment as well as resources available for those who are concerned about a friend or loved one. On Wednesday, November 9th at 6:00 PM, we will host an in-person Safety & Wellness Information Session.  This session will be facilitated by our very own Colleen Lally, in collaboration with the FCPS Student Safety & Wellness Office as an informal session for parents and answer any questions they may have around these issues.

Drug use- whether illegal or illicit- is a serious concern.  If you are the parent of a child and you have concerns, please reach out to your child’s administrator if you would like to set up a confidential meeting for your child and the Substance Abuse Prevention specialist. Fairfax County also has a number of additional resources available.  Please see this list for more resources.

Together we can help to keep our students safe.

Student Parking Notice

Effective next week our Safety & Security team will be monitoring parking lots for vehicles parked in the parking lot without a permit.  Tickets will be issued for anyone in violation. Parking permits must be visible and facing out away from the vehicle for security to visibly see the permit number.

UPDATE: There are currently 5 more parking spaces available for Juniors or Seniors wishing to purchase a parking permit. Please see Mr. Wall, Safety and Security Specialist, for an application and details concerning costs. There will be no additional parking permits issued for the rest of the school year after these five spots are issued.
