On Feb. 8, the upperclassmen participated in the Science Fair. This is the first time in a while that Science Fair participation was mandatory for many students. The Stuart science department served as judges who grade each project. Once the grades are in, the teachers will invite students to attend the regional Science Fair, in which students from all over Fairfax County Public Schools will be competing. This will be the first time in a number of years that Stuart will send a science fair participant to the regional science fair. IB Biology students, Sarah Rutherford and Emma Van Zandt’s project worked with living bioluminescent organisms. Van Zandt’s favorite part of the project was “Probably working with living organisms. It was really interesting to work on actual living things and seeing them grow.” Rutherford added, “It was cool to get the results that we wanted and expected by the end of the project.” Stuart Principal Penny Gros believes the Fair has a good influence on students saying, “It’s been a great opportunity to see the difference of student interests, which are so different. You know, someone has a project on lacrosse, another person used his baby teeth. I love seeing the topic each person chose, which I think really shows each person’s personality.” The Stuart community looks forward to the continued Science Fair participation in the coming years.
