Yearbook

Student Publication

Mission Statement

We believe our yearbook culture reflects the traditions that make Justice a wonderful community. We believe it is important to hold onto our roots and remember what makes the yearbook so important. We believe our primary role in the larger Justice community is to tell its stories in a permanent way.

Our position as a high school student publication allows a unique closeness to the students of Justice. We alone can tell our story this year – no adult media organization has the same perspective. Fifty years from now, we will be the primary storyteller people know, shaping how the community views the school. Thus, we must respect and protect our journalistic freedom.

Being on staff is far more than learning how to write a news story, how to take photographs, or how to write captions. Being on staff is about the emotional and practical support staff members give to each other. Experienced staffers say the effort would not be worth it without the rest of the staff. Inside the class, we step away from the traditional social hierarchies of high school. Friendships with unexpected people are formed under fire. We learn to take the initiative through challenges such as final deadlines, last-minute design issues, missing articles, or absent photographs. In the end by relying on one another, we become so much more.

We become a community because in the end, that’s what makes Yearbook special.

Publication Policy

Our purpose is to create a yearbook that fully represents the student body of Justice High School. Spanish is the second-most spoken language at Justice — about 40% of the students utilize English as a second language.

When editor-in-chief Emily Rutherford chose to produce our first bilingual yearbook in 2023, she said it was “important to … make the change to a bilingual yearbook to fully represent and reflect the entirety of the student body.” The community responded through their pocketbook: yearbook sales increased by 20%.

How to translate from Spanish to English:

Download the Google translator app from your device’s App Store;

Open the app and change the language to “Spanish to English”;

Select the camera icon to open Google Lens. Take a picture of the desired Spanish text to translate it; and

Read the translated material, and then repeat steps 2-4 to translate again

2023-24 Yearbook

Using the theme “It's All in the Details,” the 2024 Howl will push the boundaries of what Justice has published in the past. We aim to have a more vivid, colorful yearbook focused on the details of community life at Justice.

We will frame special moments of the year, capturing the bigger picture and emphasizing Justice’s uniqueness. Our theme will serve as a lens focusing on the various details and events that make up the warm and frenetic academic year.
